Mantri Espana Volunteer's Experience

Updated: Jan 31, 2019

My experience volunteering at a Rutuchakra workshop was truly eye-opening. It was so fun helping out and teaching these women about menstrual hygiene and talking to them about how we need to feel empowered as women about having our periods. It was so nice to see them open up about how they felt about the whole procedure and what they do to maintain their hygiene. I myself learnt a lot while helping out in the workshop. Huge thank you to Sanjana who helped us out throughout the entire process and let me be a part of the whole experience. Would truly love to help out again in the future.

I’m Anishka Agarwal, one of the volunteers for the session that RutuChakra held on the 5th of January, 2019. This experience taught me a lot about the hardships that women working as household helps face, and broadened my understanding and empathy towards these brave strong women. I myself got more educated on the topic of menstruation and the various aspects related to it. The workshop was very enjoyable and informative, the activities conducted and the conversations we all had were light hearted and educative. I thoroughly loved it and hope to be able to help more in the future in any way possible.

This was my first time volunteering at RutuChakra and I must say the whole experience was very wholesome. It was a great pleasure to work with my peers to help spread awareness about menstrual hygiene. I was delighted to see how engaged the workers were during the presentation. The experience taught me a lot about the situation if menstrual hygiene in the country. Personally listening to how the helpers deal with menstrual hygiene has broadened my perspective on the issue. Overall I'm very grateful for the experience and I applaud the RutuChakra team for putting in their best efforts to make a positive change in the society.

The Rutuchakra workshop was extremely memorable. I learnt a lot, and also loved interacting with the women! I was a little scared to speak in Hindi in front of them  as my Hindi was a little broken, but they seemed to understand every word of it. One of them even spoke about their daughters. During the group activity, we asked them about what they did when when their menstruation cycle began, and also what to do when disposing a sanitary napkin - and was glad to see that they answered each and every one of the questions, and all of them were not shy to talk about menstruation. One of them said that we should not shy away from talking about it and should educate boys about it too! It was a learning experience, not only for them , but for me too.
